Unitag is a professional QR Code platform founded in France in 2013, EU-hosted and backed by a French-English team. This is an honest comparison with Uniqode — a serious US platform, well-positioned in English-language rankings, but built for a different market than yours. If you're a European company choosing between the two, this page is here to help you make the right call based on your actual context.
You probably discovered Uniqode through an international ranking of the best QR Code platforms. It's a solid tool — but it was built for the US market. If you're based in Europe, your team speaks French, your data needs to stay in the EU, or you have codes on packaging, Unitag's geographic and regulatory proximity makes a concrete difference to your day-to-day.
Choose Unitag if…
You're a European company that wants a QR Code platform built for your market: French-speaking support, EU hosting, GDPR as a native posture, unlimited scans and codes with no caps, flexible monthly billing, and — if you need it — certified GS1 Digital Link. Unitag has been here since 2013, built to last, not to get you started quickly.
Choose Uniqode if…
Your deployment is primarily in the United States, SOC 2 Type II is a non-negotiable procurement requirement, and you're comfortable with annual billing and capped scan volumes. Uniqode is well established in the US market — that's where its track record is strongest.

Unitag was founded in 2013 in Toulouse. From day one, the platform was built for regulated markets: EU hosting, GDPR-by-default analytics, dedicated French-speaking support. That's not a layer added after the fact — it's the founding architecture. Unitag covers the same functional surface as Uniqode (dynamic QR Codes, professional vCards, scan analytics, multi-team governance) but with no cap on codes or scans, flexible monthly billing available from the first paid subscription, and GS1 Digital Link certification for packaging codes. The support team responds in French, understands European regulatory constraints, and accompanies deployments end to end.
Uniqode (rebranded from Beaconstac in 2023) is a serious US platform, well established with enterprise marketing teams in the United States. It offers a solid feature surface, native Salesforce and HubSpot integrations, and an SOC 2 Type II track record recognised in US procurement processes. Billing is annual-only on self-service plans, scans are capped by tier (500,000 to 2 million per year depending on the plan), and dynamic QR Code volume is bounded by tier. GS1 Digital Link is not supported as of today.
The two platforms look similar on the surface. They diverge on three axes that matter for a European company: where data lives, whether scans are truly unlimited, and whether you're talking to a team that knows your market.

Two hidden costs to evaluate: with Uniqode, scans are capped (500,000/year on the Plus plan) — if you exceed that threshold during a campaign peak or busy season, overage charges apply and your codes may fail at the point of sale. And since Uniqode only bills annually, you commit to a full year before knowing whether the platform handles your actual volume. With Unitag: unlimited scans, monthly billing available — scale without caps and test without annual commitment. Indicative 2026 rate: $1 = €0.93.
Both platforms cover the same functional needs. The real question isn't "which has more features" — it's "which was built for your market". For a European company, the answer lies in the origin, not the feature catalogue.
Choose Unitag if…
You're a European company and want to work with a team that speaks your language, knows your market, and supports your deployments in French.
Your scan data must stay EU-hosted to meet a GDPR audit, public tender, or buyer contractual requirement.
You need unlimited scans — without risking a cap being hit during a campaign peak, product launch, or busy season.
You want to test the platform for a month before committing to a year, without having to justify an annual budget line upfront.
You have codes on packaging or in distribution and need GS1 Digital Link, multi-country routing, or multi-tenant governance from your base subscription.
Choose Uniqode if…
Your deployment is primarily in the United States and EU data residency is not a constraint in your procurement process.
SOC 2 Type II is a hard procurement blocker in your organisation and you need an established audit history right now.
Your marketing stack is built on Salesforce + HubSpot and native connectors save you meaningful integration time.
You're comfortable with annual billing and your scan volume comfortably fits within your tier's caps.
GS1 Digital Link is not on your roadmap for the next 12 months.

From Uniqode Power to Unitag Platinum — when the cap hits at the worst time
We hit Uniqode's two-million scan cap midway through Q4 and our codes started failing in stores at the peak of the holiday season. We only found out through field reports. The migration to Unitag took three weeks — existing codes kept working throughout the transition. Six months later, we had issued GS1 Digital Link codes across 600 SKUs and the analytics depth finally lets our packaging team know which markets are actually scanning, not just how many times.

Two to four weeks for most accounts. Atlas imports your existing destination URLs in bulk, your current QR Codes keep resolving, and the customer success team manages the GS1 Digital Link rollout if it's part of the project.

SOC 2 is a US security standard, widely required in US enterprise procurement. Unitag is preparing it for Diamond clients and is following the ISO 27001 path, which is the equivalent standard in Europe. If you're a European company subject to GDPR, Unitag's EU hosting with contractual data residency and native GDPR posture generally meets the same security requirements as SOC 2 within your regulatory framework — and is often more decisive in public procurement or regulated European sectors. If SOC 2 is an absolute hard blocker in your organisation today, contact us to clarify your specific case.
No. Uniqode does not issue GS1 Digital Link URIs and does not operate a GS1-certified resolver as of April 2026. If you have codes on packaging or in distribution, GS1 Digital Link is the standard that will allow those codes to be correctly read by European retailers' systems from 2027 onwards. Unitag is GS1-certified and offers the full Unitag Digital Link range, with 200 GTINs included from the Gold subscription.
At Uniqode, scans are capped by tier — 500,000 scans per year on the Plus plan, 2 million on Power. When you hit that cap, overage charges apply and your codes may stop working depending on your contract terms. The problem is that the cap is typically hit during a peak — product launch, national campaign, end-of-year holidays — which is exactly when your codes are most critical. Unitag does not cap scans on any paid subscription. The infrastructure is sized for 2.4 million scans per day platform-wide.
Yes. Unitag offers monthly billing on Silver (€19), Gold (€49), and Platinum (€99) — you pay month by month, with no annual commitment. If you want to switch to annual, a 10% discount applies. Uniqode only bills annually on its self-service plans, meaning you commit to a year before knowing whether the platform delivers on its promises at your actual volume.
Two to four weeks on average. Your existing Uniqode codes keep resolving throughout — there's no service interruption. Atlas imports your destination URLs in bulk from a spreadsheet. The customer success team manages the mapping, analytics handover, and any GS1 Digital Link setup if it's part of the project. Migration is progressive: new print runs switch to Unitag, existing codes are maintained until their natural replacement.
Yes. Beaconstac was renamed Uniqode in May 2023. Same company, same team, same product lineage — just a new name. Everything said in this comparison applies equally if you have a contract or experience dating from the Beaconstac era.
